Unusual email sign-in alert
Short answer
Check the event in your account’s security dashboard. A new browser, trip or mobile network can alter the location shown; a successful sign-in you cannot explain needs action.
What you need to know
Work out whether a warning reflects your activity.
-
Attempt, successful sign-in or settings change?
A blocked attempt does not establish mailbox access. Compare the event type and outcome in the provider dashboard with your own activity before deciding which response is needed.
-
Do not authenticate inside the warning
A security email can be genuine or a phishing imitation. Open the provider independently. If the dashboard event is unexplained, follow its security response; if the message is fake, use reporting tools rather than replying with account details.
Check, act, and the limit
-
Start by checking
Open the provider directly instead of following a link in the alert.
-
Then act
Mark an unfamiliar event in the provider’s dashboard and follow its security flow.
-
Know the limit
An alert may describe an attempt that was blocked, not access to your mail.
