Emails disappeared or were deleted
Short answer
Search all folders first. If you find unexpected deletion alongside unknown sessions or rules, follow an incident response and ask your provider about available restore options.
What you need to know
Separate mail placement from access.
-
Use the incident branch only when evidence supports it
Search folders and inspect filters first. When disappearance coincides with unapproved rules or successful access, record those facts and follow security guidance. Missing mail on its own remains a troubleshooting problem.
-
Recovery of messages has separate limits
Provider message recovery does not follow automatically from resetting a password. Use the provider’s current restoration help for the mailbox and message state. Do not promise every deleted message can be returned or delay security actions while waiting for restoration.
Check, act, and the limit
-
Start by checking
Check Trash, Spam, Archive and filters before assuming deletion.
-
Then act
Secure the account, remove suspect rules and use provider-supported recovery if available.
-
Know the limit
This site cannot retrieve messages or guarantee that deleted mail can be restored.
